Tale 1 is the first chapter of the second Rozen Maiden manga series.
Summary[]
This chapter opens with Jun Sakurada choosing to answer "don't wind" on the filer that would have given him Shinku.
Years later, he is now a downtrodden young adult. He attends a college class as his classmates whisper about him. They discuss the possibility of him being an otaku, one of them says that he heard Jun used to be socially withdrawn. Throughout all of this, Jun feels like he's not actually there.
Jun clocks in at his job as Yamaguchi and Saitou talk at the front desk. Yamaguchi tells Saitou that he only hired Jun because he was the only guy who applied. As Jun begins work, he thinks about how much he dislikes that Yamaguchi does no work and that Saitou listens to his bragging. Yamaguchi then tells Saitou that Jun has no high school diploma and that he must have been bullied and socially withdrawn. Saitou voices concern over Jun hearing them talk about this but Yamaguchi insists it's better if he hears. Yamaguchi says that Jun has no self-confidence and that he will probably drop out of college. When Yamaguchi says that "it might be nice being a middle school graduate", Jun just wishes Yamaguchi would die.
After work, he recounts how he got to this position in life. He thinks about how he hoped things would change when he finally got the courage to go outside, but because of what happened to him during middle school he feels if that didn't happen he could have gone to a better college. Jun wishes he could redo everything from that point in his past.
Later at work, he finds a misplaced book named "How to Make a Girl". Yamaguchi tells him to dispose of it. As Jun looks through the book, he reads about the Rozen Maiden and the process of creating a doll. When a page presents him with "wind" and "don't wind", he panics and closes the book, recognizing this question from the filer years back. He takes interest in the wind-up key the book comes with and takes the book home. Once home, he discovers a large package came in. He opens it discovering another "How to Make a Girl" book and a case. Inside the case are two femur for a doll. Jun looks at the book which tells him once assembled, he will have built Shinku. Jun begins the process of building Shinku.
He attends work later tired from working on the doll. Saitou tells Yamaguchi her concern over Jun's state, but Yamaguchi just says that the countdown until he drops out from college is starting. Saitou then has an issue with the register that Jun fixes. After work, Saitou asks Jun if they could walk home together. She apologizes for laughing with Yamaguchi over the rude things he said about Jun. Jun learns that Saitou is interested in theater and that she's part of a group. Saitou is disappointed that she can't spend more time on her dream. Jun thinks about this and feels frustrated that he doesn't have any dream.
Jun returns home and finds a notice. It informs him that Weekly How to Make a Girl's publication has been suspended. The notice tells him that remaining parts will have to be collected from the N-Field. He then receives an email and discovers it's from the same email address he used when he was in middle school. The email tells him that due to Kirakishou's presence, the sender needs help from Jun. The email is signed from a "Jun Sakurada" and Jun concludes it must be from his past self.
